Fly problem in the house

I have some weird problem in my house, whenever the weather gets warm
outside.. there will be 1 fly in my house per day.. I have no clue where
they get in. It is very annoying.

I even used those plastic window screen to block all the heater vents,
return vents and exhaust fans (there is no way fly can pass thro the screen)
I checked everywhere on the 2nd/3rd floor. there is no holes. Where do
they come in? any idea??????

We had that problem at one time and later discovered a forgotten sack
of potatoes in a rarely-used cabinet. Best estimates put them at
upwards of 3 months old at least, and they had decayed into a black
liquid. The smell was incredible, but only once we opened the cabinet.
Miraculously, teh flies disappeared after dicovering and removing the
black liquid. The moral? Perhaps there is a hidden rotting something in
your house, where the flies are eating and reproducing.

There are a number of type of flies that Winter over in the walls/attics
and will get active in warm weather. If you have can lighting, they
easily make it inside, though there are a number of other areas they
gain access by.

Many years ago I lived in an apartment that the flies would get into through
a small gap between the sliding glass doors.....maybe that
helps?????.....Ross

It could be maggots breading on dead animals in the attic. At summertime the
flies will creep out thru cracks.

I use to have your problem. They come in thru the doors then camp out
in the ceiling. At midnight I would shot them down by the handful.

Thanks for the info... So, what can I do to fix it? If there is something
in the attic, do I have to call a specialist to clean/kill or spray some
chemical or do whatever they need to do to fix the problem?

Thanks for help..

The remedy, if any needed, depends on the species of fly. You probably
are dealing with cluster flies, though there are others that will have
the same practice of getting into the attics to wait out Winter. If
there are just a few a day wait them out till Spring, if it dozens to
hundreds at a time on a warm day an attic treatment may be needed,
though it is just reduces the population, many may be in the walls not
bothered by any insect treatment. At the end of the Summer an
application by one of the pyrethroid insecticides can really help by
treating the exterior of the structure. Caulking obvious cracks on the
exterior, though as with most homes it is impossible to get all the
areas they may gain entrance.

If it is one of the flesh eating species, you probably would of
noticed the dead animal odor. The odor attracts the flies, they lay
eggs, the maggots consume the carcass, then they pupate to flies and the
cycle starts again. If you are seeing these type of flies, the source is
already gone and the flies soon will be gone on their own.

If it is just the common house fly, is there a source near the home such
as a compost pile, dog runs, etc. Then you may be dealing with large
outdoor population with a few getting in. Removing the source, and
making sure the windows/doors are caulked and close well is usually all
that is needed.
