Tiling a fireplace

Questions:

1) this fireplace is used, is there a recommended type of tile, thinset
and grout for heat?

2) one standard fireplace, what is the preferred surface: straight
thinset mortar, a wire mesh first?

Thanks!

are you talking about the outside around it and the hearth?

i did one of these. the tile doesn't get too hot, you can use any tiles,
thinset, or grout. you can't use mastic.

i attached cement board first on mine. you didn't specify what you are
tiling over yet. i had large slump blocks that were about 1" from the bottom
of the grout to the top of the tile to even out.
