Rona DIY kitchen cabinets thickness, etc...
 

My wife and I bought DIY kitchen cabinets (assemble and install yourself)
from Rona, (Canada, eh!), made by a company called MasterBrand and we are
not happy with what we bought (unfortunately).

1) Our biggest concern is the Rona cabinets are only 5/8" construction,
where Home Depot's cabinets (Mills Pride) are 3/4" - we only discovered this
AFTER I had already assembled one cabinet (fully glued unfortunately). I
tried to disassemble it before the glue set, but I was too late (I broke it,
and had to glue it back together - it should be fine). We thought that Rona
and Home Depot were the same thickness, but we were wrong. Sh**!!! Is this
much to be worried about, having thinner construction cabinets? We also
paid more money at Rona!!!

2) The Rona cabinet had assembly problems - the "dadoed" groove for the
back plate did not line up very good at all with the bottom and the two
sides... I looked on another cabinet - same problem.

We plan to return the cabinets right away, but we can't disassemble the one
glued together cabinet, I want to return it as well, but they might be
reluctant to accept it... any advice?

How should we word our concerns so that they will take the whole lot back???

IMO, you should charge the cost of one wasted cabinet to experience and
education.

You are well within your rights to return the remainder.

You are probably right in that we will have to suck up the wasted cabinet...
anyone think of a way that we can return this junk cabinet, considering that
it is costing us $100 including taxes??

What about the already glued cabinet? any chance I can return it? What
could (or should) I say to convince them to take it as well?

Exactly the way you outlined it here. Factually, fairly, without
anger or blame. The cabinets are substandard. I'd guess Rona will
take them back without question as long as you have the receipts.

You need to look thru your paperwork and see what rights you have on
returns. It is possible you have no right to return ANY of the
cabinets. I don't see that the seller has breached "ANY IMPLIED
WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE"

Your excuses are lame to say the least. A thinner cabinet means more
room for dishes. It is not a bad thing.

You may want to take the already assembled cabinet as it is (assembled) and
show them that the ""dadoed" groove for the back plate did not line up very
good at all with the bottom and the two sides", they may decide to accept
it.

I assume these cabinets are of the European construction style....if so: I
don't think they need to be glued. Do the instructions that came with them
asked for glue to be used?

Yes, the instructions state that glue is to be used in securing the wooden
dowels...

Good news - Rona had no problems taking all of the cabinets back (even the
assembled one) - they said that if it is defective like I was saying, no
problem. They also stated that if you are not happy with any item
purchased, you can return it, no problems!! They boast a 100% satisfaction
guarantee, and they followed up on this guarantee. Way to go Rona! I am
impressed!

Just wondering if the cabinets you purchased from Rona were from Maple Creek. I looking at purchasing cabinets from Rona as well. Also, looking at Home Depot's Mills Pride. Prices appear to be the same. I live in Vancouver, BC.
