One of the lights attached to the ceiling fan does not light, even with a
new bulb. Can I detach this one socket or do I have to take the whole thing

It depends upon how the bulb socket is attached to the fan unit, or
whether the problem is at the socket or inside the fan housing.
Usually, the light fixture is an add-on that can be removed from the fan
without taking the whole fan unit down.
Look for some small screws between the light plate and fan unit.

The light kit is attached to the fan hub with 3 screws in the side. Trip the
breaker first

Might also check the tab in the bottom of the socket, sometimes it gets
pushed down too far to make contact with the base of the bulb.
