I have a 12 ton(?) MTD log splitter that I bought used last year. I know
how to maintain small engines, so the 5HP gas motor for the hydraulic pump
is easy.

The splitter, since it was bought used from an individual, didn't have any
manuals.

My question is about the actual hydraulics. Do I ever have to change the
fluid? How often should I change the filter on the hydraulic system? I
know I need to make sure there is enough fluid in the system, but what kind
is best?

Hydraulics are pretty rugged. They must be kept clean for long life though.

Oh, I looked again and it is a MTD (made to die) 22 ton splitter.

Heatman Contact MTD and ask them better yet ask to buy a manual

Tractor supply places sell hydraulic fluid. Galons or buckets of five
galons. I don't think you have to change the fluid, ever. Unless it gets
water in it, maybe.

At no time did Heatman ever ask where to buy or where to get oil for the
splitter.

He did ask What Kind / type / or other types to use but never where to buy.

Now if you say the hydraulic oils are all the same and the telling to get it
from a Farm supply place was telling what kind of oil. You still off here for
there is about 15 different types of HD Oil and then another 30 other brands to
pick from. They do make different viscostitys and ranges from the 5 weight.

Now if you want to be useful here. What weight and type would you say and don't
say water with a little anti-freeze in it for it will work too.
