My home has a Tappan gas range that looks like it was made in the
70's. On the front of the range just above the burners there are six
vent holes that vent heat from the oven. What is the pupose of these
holes and can they be closed? They add a tremendous amount of heat to
the kitchen.

You've answered your own question. The holes are there to vent the oven.
More specifically, they also vent combustion products and moisture.

No, you cannot block them without causing a host of problems.

They allow the oven to vent for proper heat inside the oven, they also
allow the products of combustion to come out of the oven....nope,
cannot cover or alter them!

Yes.

Electric do as well, but the gas vent is usually larger to let the
products of cumbustion out as well and the heat for the oven
vent/temp.

Many gas range installs now ask for a vented hood as well to manage
the heat and such from the range/oven.
