Default GE Washer won't spin

Have a GE Prodigy top load washer with a problem. When it goes into the spin
cycle, water drains out but it then has a loud bang/click sound when it
tries to go into spin cycle. It does agitate but not spin. Problem is
occasional but becoming more often. Any suggestions?? TIA

If your GE washer is a plastic tub style, this will help to get inside
to have a peek and hopefully get a better idea what/where the noise is
coming from and what is turning or not turning during the spin mode.

And if it is one of the newer atyle ones, there has been a litany of
transmission/brake problems with them - could very well be that.

When the motor turns in one direction, agitation occurs from within
the gearcase. When the motor turns in the other direction, the entire
gearcase spins along with the basket. If you have motor/clutch action
during spin, and you see the belt rotating the gearcase pulley, then
more than likely you have a problem with the gearcase itself. It is
highly unlikely that you will want to tackle this sort of job as a
DIY, and get it all back together correctly. If you do, you will need
a special wrench to get the main nut off in order to remove the basket
off the gearcase from within the tub.
