Default Do temperatures vary more in the sourthern hemisphere?

https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstu...-earth-58.html
"How Does Earth Move?
Earth orbits the sun once every 365 days, or one year. The shape of its
orbit is not quite a perfect circle. It's more like an oval, which
causes Earth's distance from the sun to vary during the year. Earth is
nearest the sun, or at "perihelion," in January when it's about 91
million miles away. Earth is farthest from the sun, or at "aphelion," in
July when it's about 95 million miles away."

So, note that the sun is farther from the earth in July, so how come
it's not colder then. Well, in the north, the sun hits the earth more
directly, so the earth gets more rays per acre. So the two factors
compensate for each other.

But doesn't that mean that in the southern hemisphere, when it's the
suns rays are hitting the earth obliquely and it's colder because of
that, it's also farther from the sun, so it's colder because of that
too. So the two factors reinforce each other. That is, doesn't that
mean the difference between summer and winter temperatures are greater
in the southern hemisphere than the northern?

"Why Does Earth Have Seasons?
Earth has seasons because its axis is tilted. Thus, the sun's rays hit
different parts of the planet more directly depending on the time of
year.

From June to August, the sun's rays hit the Northern Hemisphere more
directly than the Southern Hemisphere. The result is warm (summer)
weather in the Northern Hemisphere and cold (winter) weather in the
Southern Hemisphere."

Scholars believe this means the earth was invented by Italians.

Bear that in mind when you're digging for onions to put on your pizza.

I suppose the potential is there but the northern hemisphere has
vastly more land in the higher latitudes where the weather swings the
most. That is not true in the Southern Hemisphere.
Bring up google earth and center the south pole in the circle. Then do
the same with the northern hemisphere. You find out pretty quickly
that as soon as you get outside the arctic circle, the southern
hemisphere is mostly ocean that will moderate the temperature and the
northern hemisphere is mostly land. Temperature can go nuts over land.
Fairbanks Alaska is a great example. It is in the middle of a big land
mass and the temperature swings from almost 100 in the summer to 50
below in the winter. (It was 99 in Fairbanks when we got off the plane
in late June on our trip, hotter than it was in Ft Myers Fla when we
left)

Good point.

One summer, 50 years ago, I got postcards from 2 people who did not know
each other but both knew me. They had different views of Mt. McKinley
on them, and both wrote that I should go to Alaska because there were
great jobs for people who could fix things. Unfortunately my huskie
was about to have puppies and I coudln't go.

That depends on which bible you are talking about. OT or New.

There are TWO of them?
Two to one? That's unfair. "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance" never stood a chance.
But it might explain why my janitor is a Latino called
"Jesus". Assuming the second one was in the original Italian, of
course.
Thanks for the update.
Ping me when the third version is published. I'll torrent it.

There are actually lots of versions but the big difference is between
the Old Testament that our Jewish friends have been passing down tor a
few thousand years and the New Testament written, mostly in western
Europe over the last 1500 years or so. Each brand of Christian seems
to have their own take on what it is supposed to say.

I went to Catholic school and they never made much mention of the bible.
It was like "don't bother reading it, we'll interpret it for you"
Yeah, sure, thanks.

Growing up we had a bible in the house and thought it would be a good
idea to read it. Two pages was enough.

So, what did I learn from 12 years of Catholic school education? Use
your church envelope.

I was pretty fortunate to have never been encumbered by any organized
religion. I can see virtue is some of the things all of them tell us,
other stuff is pure bull****. It is still none of my business what
other people believe and I think they have as much of a right to free
speech as the other special interest groups. That means I am not
offended if they put up a creche in the park.

That wasn't the worst thing in the world considering the crap
semi-literate self-ordained preachers have extracted from it.

Growing up we had a bible in the house and thought it would be a good
idea to read it. Two pages was enough.

I had an aunt on the Protestant side of the family who was considered to
be a religious nutter. She had a prominently displayed bible in the
living room. Being a kid who would read a ketchup label if there was
nothing else around, I gave it a whirl. I may have made it to three pages...

I never have read the complete OT. I did make it through 'Good News for
Modern Man' in boot camp. Like I said, I'll read anything and once
through the Green Book I'd gathered which way a Claymore should be
pointed and needed fresh material.

So, what did I learn from 12 years of Catholic school education? Use
your church envelope.

I was subjected to 'religious instruction' for a total of six years or
so. I was off to a good start when Sister Mary Elephant asked me to
recite one of the Commandments. It quickly became apparent I didn't even
know there were 10 commandments let alone being familiar with a
particular one. She branded me a Heathen. I still am. I did catch the
movie when it came out a couple of years later.

The high point was the nun using Necco wafers for the First Communion
practice. She did impress on us we weren't supposed to chew the real
thing. I was sad to learn of the demise of Necco. I used to walk by the
plant on Mass Ave. in Cambridge and can understand why the new owners
found 'sanitation issues'.

I did revisit the topic in my 30's. There are enough intelligent devout
Catholics that I thought re-examination was worthwhile. Still not for me
although I have more respect for the Catholic Church than the Church of
God with Signs Following.

https://ferrebeekeeper.wordpress.com...gns-following/

Like I said, letting people read the bible isn't necessarily a good
thing. We won't even go into the inbred nutters at Westboro Baptist.

If there is a disappointing thing about Christianity it is, after
preserving Western culture for over a thousand years, many are
capitulating to political correctness. The Jul season is pleasant; after
all they stole almost everything from the Old Religion.

'Tree of Salvation: Yggdrasil and the Cross in the North' by G. Ronald
Murphy S.J. goes into quite a bit of detail. He has also written two
books on the Heliand, an adaptation of the gospels in Old Saxon that was
edited to make it more appealing to the target audience. Jesus is the
drighten of a small band of warriors.

Christmas is a marketing event with a lot of phony sentiment and
unreasonable expectations. If I want to give someone a gift. I will do
it when they need it, not just because some pagan solstice celebration
happened a couple days before. If History is as accurate as passed
down legends Jesus was probably born in the summer and not on year
zero ... or is that year one? AD or BC?
