The purpose of a basic education is to teach one to be able to think and reason logically; from there it matters little about what field one is in to apply those precepts. Certain technical or specialty fields do require specific training/knowledge, of course, but there's a far wider range of possible avocations beyond that what a degree is in has little bearing on the ability to do the specific job. -- |

In article , says...
The purpose of a basic education is to teach one to be able to think and reason logically; from there it matters little about what field one is in to apply those precepts. It used to be that way. Now colleges teach you to blindly follow whatever they tell you. Especially if you take anything but technical courses like engineering or doctoring. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus |

Most good jobs tend to need the higher education. Our two lawyer sons stared with BS's in business administration. If you can cut it, I think STEM degrees are best and even then you need advanced degrees. They open more pathways. I know lawyers with degrees in science but know no scientists with degrees in liberal arts. |

My first introduction to programming in college involved FORTRAN IV and punch cards. I thought it sucked. Even then is was more 'here's a tool you guys will probably use like a glorified slide rule' rather than a separate discipline. A couple of my friends who did like it dropped out and got jobs. Formal education wasn't moving fast enough for them. It took about ten years before I started doing assembler programming for the microcontrollers that were infiltrating industry. I enjoyed it and still do. I certainly didn't plan that as a career. |

That pathway was blocked so I went into the trades instead. Eventually managed to get into Uni in my late 20s but still not in engineering - instead a career in technical education. -- Xeno Nothing astonishes Noddy so much as common sense and plain dealing. You can google up curriculum at the colleges and judge for yourself. The BA requirements for chemistry that I saw at the University of Delaware are not strong as those required for the BS. This might retard the BA from being accepted in graduate school chemistry. I suspect that either could get you in med school, law school or an MBA program where a strong chemistry background is not needed. There is also a matter of the school granting the degree. A long time ago the head of the chemistry department at Delaware told me they did not accept any chemistry graduates from certain schools. |
