A related question would be why does it matter? It's a piece of cheap
wood as evidenced by the fact that it's joined together with many
small pieces. It's not something that's typically finished, exposed,
that has to match, etc.

It's a human characteristic called curiosity.

Damn Andy. Never enough details. Is it solid, laminated or what?

Details matter. You just never catch on.

It looked like those hardwood floor panels made from frankenbamboo or
some other species. Cabinet makers used to like 'white wood' which was
often poplar. Easy to work, not much grain, and it could be made to look
like anything with a little creativity. Modern technology has mastered
the art.

'White wood' now usually refers to whatever softwood is cheap. Like
stopping by the fish counter at the grocery store you might need a DNA
analysis to figure out what it really is.

I agree, it does look like some laminated cellulose product with a
picture of wood on it. I guess he just wants an opinion of what his
picture of a picture looks like to us. Southern pulp pine?

Actually there is a "blockwood" product on the market - similar in
concept to finger jointed trim. Allows the use of "marginall" lumber
and reduces waste. Some is even 2 layes glued together to eliminate
through glue joints. It was pretty common in Zambia in the early
seventies - ANY lumber was hellishly expensive as the vast majoritywas
imported into a landlocked country with currency controls.

Cursing not necessary. I gave a picture.

If it's wood it is a solid as opposed to a gas or liquid. :-)

It is not made of layers per say but looks to be made of pieces of wood attached to each other.

When I looked at it from the side, I saw finger joints.

Since it is not cut from solid wood, it may be for underlayment.

Just a guess.

Looks like everyone is stumped.

It is "blockwood" and is useable anywhere you would use conventional
board lumber as long as the appearance is not an issue (ie - "paint
grade"
