Jaywalking is more often enforced in cities like NYC where traffic is dense and highly choreographed. Why not leave it to peoples common sense. Because common sense is uncommon. It's more important to keep traffic flowing than to let every swinging dick wander across the streets whenever and wherever he wants. To expand: one of the main streets in town passed by an area where a run down motel catering to transients was on one side of the street, and a disreputable saloon on the other. There was no crosswalk so the clientele of either crossed the four lanes wherever they pleased. When one was struck and killed the city's response was to redesign the road to three lanes with a center turning lane, effectively turning a 4 lane road into a 2 lane one, and lower the speed limit. They also put in a couple of crosswalks with pedestrian triggered traffic light. The drunks still cross where they want. Ironically, the sleazy saloon was replaced by a new homeless shelter -- which is directly across the road from a micro-brewery. Nothing changes. |
