Shoulda done it sooner !
 

Yesterday we rode to Mountain Home Ar and picked up a (very lightly) used
log splitter . Spent a bit more than I wanted to , but this unit is
obviously barely used - guy said about 5 hours on it . It's a 12 ton
Earthquake branded unit , and it works very very well even on knotty
crotches . Designed to be towed out into the woods behind a yard tractor or
4 wheeler , it's perfect for me .
Since I tore up the bicep in my left arm (motorcycle mishaplast summer)
splitting with a maul has become a real bitch and not something to look
forward to . I split as much in 30 minutes last night as I have been in 3
hours or so by hand ,

Splitting with a maul was good exercise when I was in my 40's but later
50's I used a splitter. In later 60's I just turned the thermostats and
sent a check to the oil man.

slightly used with maybe 10 hours on it.

Probably not Frank . I'm 65 and can still do anything I could do at 35 . I
just do it slower now ... I'm lucky to be in generally excellent health ,
other than limitations from injuries . I figger as long as I do , I can .
And I ain't plannin' on quitting any time soon .

There was, of course, some kidding about Medicare. The next day I was
on crutches with a screwed up knee. That slowed me down for a long
time. Steps can still be a problem.

Damn , that sucks . I have aches and pains , most are taken care of by OTC
meds - but occasionally I need something stronger . I know what makes me
hurt and limit or avoid those activities . A session of splitting would
leave me in moderate pain , but this new tool is going to make a lot of
difference . I was dreading getting enough wood split for next winter , now
I'm more concerned about getting it out of the woods . I have made some
"paths" thru the woods with the front blade and mower deck of my Rusty
Tractor , which makes the size of my little yard trailer the limiting factor
.. Beats the hell out of hauling rounds out with a hand truck ! For the area
farther away from the woodlot I plan to transfer the wood to my 5 x 8
utility trailer to get it back to the woodlot . One cool thing about this
splitter is that it is set up to tow a trailer behind it (limited to 15 MPH
so no over the road) . I can set up out in the woods and split there which
will let me get more wood per load ...

Hope so. I'm 77 which is a lot different from when I was 65 but I am in
better shape than my peer group. Mentioned that 75 year old neighbor
that had a tree fall on him that was partially down and he was cutting
when it fell on him and killed him. Then there was the 82 year old
neighbor that fell off his roof and lost some teeth. Lot tougher to do
things when older. Take care.

At age 50 I had developed an allergy to work. Breaking out in hives.
Walked into the HR office, looked out the window and said "I quit,
send my check to the bank."

I've been happy about it for the last 15 years. The damn checks keep
coming. No more allergies.
