Rocking chair rocks back too far
 

This old rocking chair rocks so far back it feels like you'll go over
backwards. It's never actually gone over but it's scary. It's quite old so I
can see the wood has worn away a good bit on the bottom at the point it hits
the floor. There is a dowel at this spot holding the bottom to the leg. Is
there a way to beef the bottom up or will if have to be taken apart and
reworked? I imagine when this chair was new, it was fine and has since worn
too much wood off from rocking.

A close-up image of the back of the runners so that we can see the wear
and/or design would have been more helpful.

In any case, take a look at this image:

You can see that the back of the runners curve in the opposite direction
compared to the rest of the runner. Some designs are more pronounced than
others. Some just flatten out a bit, some actually have a "reverse arc".

To prevent the chair from rocking back too far, you could add a wedge to
the back of the runners. It might take some trial and error (use tape or
hot glue) until you find the correct length and angle that hits that happy
medium between that "falling feeling" and a hard stop.

You could put a screw into the bottom to "remind" you not to lean back
to far (much cheaper than a trip to the hospital!) Or, maybe some cloth
wound around the end of the leg would do the same thing.
