Board President Toni Preckwinkle has proposed a tax designed to raise revenue, but it's being promoted as a way to reduce soda consumption and in turn improve public health.


The proposed penny-an-ounce tax is facing stiff opposition from the beverage industry. The American Beverage Association has about $600,000 to oppose it, which is scheduled to be taken up Thursday by the county board.

New York City Ex-Mayor Michael Bloomberg is spending $1 million in Cook County in support of the tax.

Earlier this year, Philadelphia approved a sugary beverages tax. Voters in San Francisco, Oakland and Albany, California and Boulder, Colorado approved similar taxes Tuesday.

That's a great idea. All this stuff that they are taxing under the
guise of "we're only doing it for your health" should absolutely be
banned from purchase with EBT cards. TV Dinners, fast food all that
crap. If they can't or won't work for their sustenance, then they
should be provided with wholesome, nutritious food. Plenty of
vegetables, good meat, starches, etc. Potato chips? Popcorn, candy,
soda pop, NO FREAKING WAY!

Trouble is, the a**hole politicians would not dare offend their voter
base - the slugs that live only to "work" at voting for the slimeballs
who will continue to provide them with more and more "free ****"

that sugary beverages would have to include most artisanal coffees and
lots of drinks at bars and restaurants

That assumes the chemicals that trick you into thinking something is
sweet are safer than sugar. You also should look at fruit juice if
this all bothers you. 100% grape juice packs about 1.7 times the
calorie count as a Coke. (160 cal for 8oz vs 150 for a 12oz coke)

Maybe we should STFU about people drinking bottled water. ;-)

This is just a tax on certain sugar drinks. I did not see grape juice
on the list and it has almost twice as much sugar as a coke.
