First question is are the bricks glazed? If yes, do not let anyone

Check the BIA (Brick Industry Association) web site.
The Tech Notes section has everything you could ask for.

Detrich chemicals [ speling may be wrong ] sold at Sherwin Williams
sells brick and stone treatments. They are a 1st choice and cover
everything even neutralization of acid on ground.
