Westinghouse Stove oven heat keeps climbing?
 

Hi Everyone,

I have a problem with my Westinghouse stand alone stove. When I turn on the
oven, the temperature keeps climbing. The stove is rather old and the model
number has long since worn off.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Gotta be either stuck thermostat contacts or a failed temperature sensing tube
on the thermostat. Replace it. If you remove it and take it to an appliance
parts shop they'll be able to ID it and sell you a suitable replacement from
its appearance and your telling them it came from a Westinghouse stove.

Climbing to what , How high, Im sure you wont remove it to be fixed , "
I wouldnt " Give more info, and Get a repair guy out . But Dont
leave yourself open to a open ended billl . Get a bid and stick to
it .

bet you use a castic oven cleaner.. it got on the sensing tube and
chewed a hole i it... gonna cost about $50 or so to put in a new
thermostat controler in the oven... it comes with the control box with a
long senser connected to it that cannot be removed that has gas in it to
tell the oven to turn off or on depending what the temp. is.......
next time dont clean the senser tube....

Depending on the design of the range you have and whether it is gas or
electric, uncontrollable oven temperature could be caused by a faulty oven
thermostat, a shorted relay or a bad electronic control or defective relay
board.

JFYI. "Westinghouse" were pretty good for stamping/printing part numbers
right on their appliance's components so if you can find the cause, there
may be a part number on it to use for getting a replacement. If it is
actually a "White Westinghouse" stove ("white" not describing the colour
necessarily), there may or may not be part number on components of it. Those
"White Westinghouse" models are made by Frigidaire.

Hi Dan,

Sorry, it is electric. Any ideas on how to test the relay or thermostat
(without finding the internal Temp of the oven). The stove is probably about
15 years old.

Well since those components open and close an electrical circuit depending
on temperature sensed in the oven, not really. Usually a technician would
monitor their performance while watching the temperature get to the point
where they should open and close.

Check you range's electrical diagram, if these's no relay in the circuit a
defective oven thermostat is about the only thing which could cause
uncontrollable temperature if the elements are getting red hot. Relays may
be used on self-cleaning models, rarely on regular clean ranges if not
electronically controlled.
