Default Drywall screws for metal studs prone to strip, please help.

I finished off a basement for a friend and used metal studs for the
first time. The metal studs were the thin gauge that Depot sells,
thicker metal studs are special order. I used the proper screws made for
the drywall and metal studs. It was impossible to use my drywall screw
"gun" without striping the metal stud. I also used a drywall screw
"dimpler" bit and that also would strip the metal. I finally found that
by putting a phillips screwdriver bit in my cordless drill I could get
the screws below the surface of the drywall by applying pressure to the
screw, even this technique failed sometime.

I hope to soon finish off my basement and would like to use metal studs
again but do not want to waste time putting up the drywall like I have
already.

As great an idea as the metal studs are I would be willing to pay a
premium for screws that worked with a screw gun.

Any help or ideas?
