At least one really rich guy can see reality, and care about people. Pay
attention to what the wacko righties have to say about this. Who would you
rather trust?

How much do you think your fair share is from what someone
else earned?

Do be specific exactly your disagreement with the speaker.

He is basically saying what Sens. Bernie Sanders is saying.
Its not "FAIR" you make so much money, there should be more
equality.

Anyone else have an opinion on this? Is it really that hard to understand? OR do
you all really think Nick is only saying that "it isn't fair".

No sense arguing these sorts of points. The Global Warming Denialists
will STILL be denying it when the average temperature in ALASKA is 90F
("We're just in a warming cycle... happens every 10,000 years!"
"Great! Let's throw a few more logs on the fire!"). I've friends
who are *convinced* there are WMD's in Iraq (I guess Bush/Cheney
didn't want us to know they were RIGHT??)

What is more amusing is to see the "reasoned arguments" behind such
beliefs. And, from whence their reasoning comes (as it usually
doesn't originate in THEIR braincases!)

A friend thinks he has a *right* to tell his neighbor what color
they can paint their house: "You'll affect the value of MY house!"
"Damn right! And, if *you* wanted to sell your house to a guy who
wanted to put up a meat rendering facility, you *should* be able to!
(The fact that this might affect your neighbor's house value is
no longer part of the equation!)

Another friend thinks healthcare should be "free" to all: "Damn
right! And, if all those folks on the 'poor' side of town want to
take a bus ride over to use YOUR expensive specialist(s), they
should be able to -- after all, it's *free*, right?" (The fact
that *he* might no longer be able to get a convenient appointment
due to the rush of folks to the "top tier" providers -- all free,
of course -- isn't something he's quick to realize). "No! They
should go to doctor's in THEIR part of town!" "Why? Is there
some rteason they can't afford your high priced (free!) doctor??"

An immigration activist is always on TV here advocating opening our
borders: "They're just looking for a better life! They just
want jobs so they can feed their families!" "Damn right! We
should all leave our homes unlocked in case there are other things
that they might want/need: clothing, televisions, warm beds, etc."

Listening to folks' "reasoning" tells you an awful lot about how
they view the world and their place in it -- esp the inconsistencies!

I'm just plain selfish: I want to be around people that are reasonably
healthy so *I* don't get sick; I want to be sure the folks on the
road can "make me whole" *if* they slam into my vehicle; I don't want
folks "coveting" my stuff -- cuz they've got "good stuff" of their own.

We're not destitute; we can afford to live with a little less so
others can (hopefully) have a little more. It doesn't have to be
a zero-sum game.

Here's an interesting "thought experiment" to try on your friends/colleagues:
- Imagine a device capable of creating anything out of thin air exists.
- Imagine these devices appear on every doorstep, overnight (delivered
by benevolent aliens -- "God" for folks suffering that delusion)
Ask yourself how each of your friends would likely react to this.

E.g., would Trump suddenly lament that he's no richer than the hobo
on the street corner? Would the "haves" want to concoct reasons
to deny use of said devices (and ownership!) to certain groups (e.g.,
the "have-nots")? Would folks move to put rules in place as to
what they could be used for -- even though they couldn't ENFORCE any
of those rules?

I've found it doesn't tell you much to *ask* people how they would react.
It's sort of like asking them if they are racist, bigoted, misogynistic,
etc. So, it's really an exercise for you to perform using your opinions
of your friends/colleagues (other public officials?) to shed some
light on what you *really* think about them and how objective their
thought processes are!

No sense arguing these sorts of points.

At least not with people who trot out the insults as soon as they encounter
differences of opinion. (FTR, not you!) Or with people who live in their own
world of "facts" unverifiable anywhere in the known universe except in the
echo chambers of their "besties." I always have enjoyed even controversial
discussions as long as there's no ear-biting or below the belt punches.
Especially with people like you who aren't partisan but logical.

When I hear some say the ultra rich should be taxed at the same rate as
everyone else, it *seems* fair. That is until you consider they already pay
less on average than the common man because the tax code is rife with tax
exemptions they've bought with huge campaign contributions. They have
access to tax-shelters and take advantage of loopholes that poor working
stiffs can only dream of. Some of the richest people in America, the
Waltons, have made fools of America by forcing their health insurance costs
on the taxpayer. That's got to stop.

Besides, we know what happens when too much wealth is concentrated in too
few hands while the hoi polloi are starving. I guess the lessons of the age
of the robber barons, the factory store and the 1929 crash (that nearly
drove America to REAL socialism) have been largely forgotten and will have
to be learned again. I don't need to earn my wealth on the broken backs of
the people stuck in dead-end jobs with little hope of advancement.

Now onto _Dementia 13_ which I haven't seen since my film classes a long
time ago.
