Default Need help / tips for using blowtorch

Actually, I don't need help, but the entire USA needs help to keep it
from going down the toilet.

Here's another example of your voyage to the bottom of the toilet bowl,
with your ultimate destination being hell:

Blow Torch Rapist’ Strikes Again In Detroit
January 23, 2014 6:36 AM

DETROIT (WWJ) - He’s been dubbed the “Blow Torch Rapist” and Detroit
police say he’s struck again.

The latest attack occurred just before 7 a.m. Wednesday in a largely
abandoned neighborhood near Plymouth and Meyers roads the city’s west
side.

A 23-year-old woman told police she was leaving a gas station when a man
came behind her and put a gun to her head. The woman said her attacker
forced her into a car, ripped off her clothes and began burning her face
with a blow torch.

Police say the victim stabbed the man in the eye with a screwdriver and
was able to get away and call for help. She’s currently hospitalized in
stable condition.

The suspect fled the scene in a small, 4-door, beige vehicle. He’s
described as a black male with a dark complexion, in his early to
mid-20s, about 6’2? tall and 185 pounds. .

Police believe the suspect is the same man who attacked two women last
July. The women were found just miles apart in vacant fields – both
severely beaten and without any clothing.

The first woman was found around 5:50 a.m. July 26 in the 12800 block of
Eaton, near Meyers Road and Lyndon Street. Police say the 37-year-old
was physically assaulted and had burn marks on her body. Just over 24
hours later, the second woman was found around 7 a.m. July 27 at Elmira
and Iris Streets, near Plymouth and Meyers roads. Police say the woman
was set on fire and sexually assaulted. Although both women were left in
critical condition after the attacks, they survived.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to get a blow torch operating????
At least 2 minutes to get the pressure tube heated up and vaporizing the
gasoline or coleman fuel. Are you sure the perp used a blow torch???/

Sounds terrifying, for the victims. Be nice if

willingness to use it.

I'm calling for immediate reduction of propane
tank capacity. No more high capacity propane
magazines or clips, capable of firing large
flames, for long periods of time. Why, if only
one life could be saved! Who's with me? The
time is now!

Now you've done it!
The local paper had a picture and story last year of an accident during
a sewer construction project. The picture showed a front end loader with
a load of crushed rock had gotten too close to the edge of the hole and
the sandy ground had given away and most of the loader had gone into the
hole. The story was covered for several days and always told of the dump
truck that backed into the hole!

A lot of people smarter than the average reporter will refer to a
propane torch or a butane torch as a "blow torch" - and the flame on
them is virtually instant - and they are a LOT easier to carry around
and conceal.

I'd guess it's a MAPP torch; most have a combo valve and igniter which
is actuated with a trigger pull.

Where there are idiotic laws making self-defense difficult, I recommend
a can of wasp and hornet spray. Reaches 10' or so, unlike mace/pepper
spray, it doesn't wear off, and if the attacker fires a gun, it'll
ignite and become a flame thrower.

However, a screwdriver in the eye is an effective expedient defensive
move. Good for her!

And more important, since the clueless guy seemed to think
alt.home.repair was relevant (why do we see so many rants between there
and misc.consumers?), it was likely one of those pocket torches, which is
butane. Really kind of useful, if safety considerations make it hard to
start up, the small size is likely what the guy in the story wanted. A
propane torch is hardly that portable, and unless you splurge on the more
expensive model with the self starter, you have to turn the knob, hold the
torch, and use an igniter, kind of hard to hold the victim while doing
that, so they could have run away while you arm your threatening device.

I really should get a new tank of propane for my torch, there are times
when it can be useful. Though that pocket butane torch has been handy for
soldering things that were too much for my soldering gun.

You should check Snopes, and a couple other web sites. Wasp spray isn't
suited for self defense.

weapon too. Nice flame thrower if you have a cigarette lighter, unless
that's just a movie thing.

The concept makes sense. A flammable spray, so it moves away from the can
and can be lit on fire.

I know someone talked about it back in high school, but I can't remember
if he merely saw it in a movie, or had tried it himself.

I once accidentally sprayed my eye with dryer fabric-softener spray and had
blurry vision for several days. The effects of hair spray probably last
longer.

Especially if it's perfumed, which can make a lot of things "toxic".

Some years ago, a teenager in Aus had seen that
on a movie, perhaps James Bond movie. He found
an Au size critter in the closet of his house,
and decided to try the Bond technique.

I don't remember if the critter died in the
process, but the house got burned to the ground.

* Propane is hot. Mapp is hotter. Acetylene
is hotter, yet. Oxy acetylene is even more
so. I've not used Mapp Pro, but suspect it's
some where between propane and mapp.

* Have a fire extinguisher near by, and be
ready to use it. Garden hose is excellent idea.

* When possible, heat from the back of what you
are doing, so you don't light the rest of the
work on fire.

* Small silver brazing can be done with mapp,
but acetylene is preferred.

Hair spray does ignite with a lighter and shoots a flame.. I've done
it, my brother has done it. It is not a defense weapon, though.

Freshmen in college dorms tend to do a lot of stupid stuff to annoy
each other (but generally they avoided anything that had a high
chance of permanent harm). This was particularly true just before
vacations or during vacations among students who didn't leave for
whatever reason, so they didn't have much studying to do. I recall
that in the 1970's I saw demonstrations of things like turning spray
deodorant into a flame thrower. I may have tried a couple of them.
Anyway, it flames, but as a practical attack it may be worthless:
it's too easy to knock a lighter out of position or out of your
hand, and while you're fooling with the lighter and spray can of
something, it's hard to protect your groin from being kicked. It's
not like it can produce flames that can reach across a room.

There was also the (annoying but harmless) attack that sometimes
worked through a locked door: fill an envelope (typically 8" x 11",
open on the short end) full of shaving cream, insert open end under
door of dorm room, get your copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry
and Physics (a very thick, heavy book) and drop it on the envelope.
Often, you'd hit the ceiling of the far side of the room.

The concept makes sense. A flammable spray, so it moves away from the can

I know someone talked about it back in high school, but I can't remember

Graham cracker crumbs in the bed (short-sheeted, of course).

Dresser drawers removed, dresser inverted, drawers inserted, dresser
re-inverted.

Flash bulb in lamp.

The list is endless.

You should check Snopes, and a couple other web sites. Wasp spray isn't
suited for self defense.

You use what you have. A rolled-up magazine is better than nothing.

Some years ago, a teenager in Aus had seen that on a movie, perhaps
James Bond movie. He found an Au size critter in the closet of his
house, and decided to try the Bond technique.

I don't remember if the critter died in the process, but the house
got burned to the ground.

"Hey kids, don't try this at home" is frequently good advice.

Isn't that what they teach in self-defense courses?

The real thing about those courses is they aren't about "what to use" but
actually doing.

I've never gone out of the house without some sort of knife, since I was
at least 15. But it would never occur to me to use it as a weapon. Even
if it did, I don't think I could follow through. We do get squeamish.

So things like a rolled up newspaper is more in the realm of what some can
use, and then run.

I think I got it from reading about those self-defense courses, but one
time when a bicyclist went through a red light when I was crossing, and
worse, a bus was stopped at that corner so the cyclist didn't know if any
pedestrians were crossing, he ran into my arm, which caused him to attack
me like I was the problem. I remember seeing sunglasses in his pocket,
and taking them and throwing them. I seem to recall he want after the
sunglasses. Wouldn't work when someone was planning to do you damage, but
it has potential for distracting some random attack.

I don't know about that. Look at usenet arguments.

I'd like to think that I could do whatever was necessary in time of
need, but I've been lucky so far.

If attacked by a thug, I suspect it's way too time-consuming to find
exactly the right blade in your Leatherman to use for self-defense.

Someone in a bicycle newsgroup suggested that if you are chased by a
dog, turn and yell GET OFF THE COUCH! which will confuse him long enough
for you to escape. Might not be a bad idea to carry a few spare tennis
balls along when you ride too...

There was an email that went around, about using
wasp spray as self defense. I think that gullible
people will put confidence in false information,
and find them selves under protected. I'd hate to
speak at the funeral of someone who could have had
effective defense, but chose to rely on wasp spray.

When I was a kid, I always got off my bike and faced the dog and then
backed off his territory. Dogs will usually attack something fleeing
but will rarely attack you head-on, as long as you're non-threatening.
Of course attack dogs are trained differently so there is no escape. A
gun works here, too. The second half of the magazine belongs to the
owner.

Carb cleaner works best on wasps. Has no effect on bumble bees because
of their furry coats. Bet it would work for self defense, also.

A) A gun too big to conceal is to big to be of use when it's needed.
B) That's why automatics were invented.
C) I'll **** him off six times.

Cheap hairspray works very well. It sticks their wings together (they
touch on the backstroke) and they drop like a rock.

Did you mean a 380 in pocket versus a .45 in the truck?

That's (PPK) exactly what I have. It fits in the pocket real good.
