I would guess that you have a loose or disconnected neutral
somewhere in that circuit. It could be at any receptacle, switch,
or point of use, or even the panel itself.

The interrupted, usually black, wire that you read on each side
of the switch is the hot. Neutrals are typically white. If your
switch has a black and white on the switch, it is a "switch leg" -
a way to use normal Romex while ignoring color conventions
(pretend both wires are black).

Of course, a good electrician uses tape or a permanent marker to mark
the ends of the white wire, in that application. Just being polite to
the next guy in there 20 years later, who may get distracted before he
puts the wall or ceiling box back together. (especially the ceiling box)

If both terminals of a single pole switch are reading hot, when tested to
ground, and this situation exists in several rooms, you likely have an open
circuit on the neutral conductor

The Stucco site is not a help forum, it's an
*advertising* forum that invades real forums
(like "alt.home.repair", part of "usenet")
parasitically in order to generate free
advertising for itself, which continually
advances its search engine placement, thereby
increasing its own revenue through its click-
through advertising commissions.

So the first thing you should do is write them
an email and tell them to quit spamming.

Then try to find your way here through proper
channels. Please do a google search on "Usenet"
and post the regular way.

Assuming this is in North America?
The switch is (or switches are) in the hot/live side of the lighting
circuit.
The 'return' is the neutral, usually white wiring; it is not switched
but must be intact all the way from each/all light fixture/s back to
the main panel, where it there should be white neutral wires connected
firmly to the neutral bar (not ground!).
Sounds like that neutral side of the circuit may be broken/
disconnected somewhere. Check all connections.
Was anything recently disturbed by other work, drilling holes, sawing,
plumbing etc. that might give clue where to look for a break in the
circuit?
