Default Showerhead drips off and on occasionally during the night

4 year old american standard shower *single handle" faucet with shower
head in shower stall. The dang thing out of the blue just starts
dripping in the middle of the night for a short blast and then stops
again. Is the likely just the washer in the faucet or might it be
something in the shower head?

Probably need an expansion tank on the water heater.

No, it's the municipal water pressure. In the middle of the night
nobody is using much water, so the pressure goes up.

You should have a regulator installed at the water meter before
something blows up.

Oh, don't say that. He'll have nightmares for years.

Maybe both Extrol tank, and also regulator. Of course, you
could always leave the faucet dripping in the cellar sink.
Or do what I do, get up and use the potty a couple times
every night, and remember to flush.
