Toothpaste in drain
Why is it, toothpaste clings to the inside of my drains?
It's not like anyone brushes their teeth, without "wasting" water. The drains begin to drain slow, then end up stinking. I was talking to some neighbors, they say they have the same problem. The drains are nasty, this is pvc pipe. I've cleaned them before, the stench is overwhelming. Maybe someone is ****ing in my drains, I dunno, but its ****ing me off. |

If the sewer gas is finding the (tiny, with an overflow valve side exit) sink trap the easiest way out, a plugged roof vent is the likely cause. Stick your nose down the tub drain- does it stink as well? Tothpaste can clog, of course, but it usually keeps that fresh minty smell.... -- aem sends... |

Yeah, I'd sure give a lot of weight to advice from some high school graduate whose "professional" credentials were issued after a four month course in how to scrape tartar off teeth using a steel pick.... |

Some boiling water with a little dish detergent, poured into the drain, should clean it fairly well. Follow with a little full-strength bleach. Take out the plug, remove remaining hair, etc. Ick! Hate doing it. |

My father still believed in toothpast, back in 1954, but he said you didn't need the whole length of the bristle area, like all the tv commercials show it. Just the width was plenty. Oh, yeah, he was a dentist. |

Maybe they continue to learn things from the dentists they work for. AFAIK Phish is right. The stannous fluoride is probably valuable for a few years, but I wonder if it matters after a while. Maybe not. |

Periodically dump some clorox down the drain and let it sit for a while. ....works for me. |

Toothpaste in drain
Highly unlikely it is toothpaste in the drain. Hair, dirt and soap will
cling to the sides of the pipe and eventually begin to decompose into a black 'sludge' about the consistency of toothpaste. It smells, really bad and strains your hands when you get it on them. Bleach, boiling water, and even some good old draino will usually clear it. "Kyle W." wrote in message ... Why is it, toothpaste clings to the inside of my drains? Additional info from moi: Use good quality electric brush - Sonicare, though initially expensive, has far outlasted two other brands. Be sure to brush GUMS as well! Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) cleans teeth squeaky clean. Some say too abrasive ?? I like it. I rinse with hydrogen peroxide (my hygienist approves) rather than the colored water with icky taste that constitutes most commercial rinses. Change your (manual) toothbrush every six months, as we are exhorted to do? Yep -- sell a lot of toothbrushes! IMHO unnecessary unless brush is really deteriorated. Just my .02 |

The drains are nasty, this is pvc pipe. I've cleaned them before, the stench is overwhelming. Having last week spent about an hour snaking out my bathroom-sink drain, I've now taken to spitting toothpaste, phlem (from swishing with listerine) down the TOILET. Why? Because the pipe out of the toilet is of MUCH larger diameter, thus MUCH larger cross-sectional-area to circumference (where the stuff would stick to it) ratio (is the diameter-squared, that ratio varies as), thus less sticks and more goes out to the street sewer. Maybe someone is ****ing in my drains, I dunno, but its ****ing me off. As long as there's running water taking it out, it all goes the same place, and does NOT "stick". I had a dental hygentist say toothpaste is purely optional. *It is the brush, floss and mouthwash that is important. Hygienist may have a point. QUESTION: what do OTHER hygienists and dentists say about this? What I've heard is that the (hopefully VERY fine) "grit" in toothpaste helps grind-off the crud from the teeth. But you do not need much at all; just a tiny amount does the trick (doing it a la tv-toothpaste-ad just sells MUCH more toothpaste to stick to the sices of your pipes!) Again, what do YOU hear from YOUR -- well, DENTISTS? THANKS! David |
