They had a policy (if I remember correctly) of prohibiting people
from cutting firebreaks because it inconvenienced the three legged
tit mouse or some such nonsense. There was a big fire and the only
house to survive belonged to some fellow who said "F*&% You!" and
got on a tractor and cut a firebreak. Of course, the fire killed
all of the three legged tit mice and the government probably went
after the guy who cut a firebreak.

They were in a government nursing home and
remained safe.

Anybody dumb enough to be clearing dry brush without fire-fighting
capability on-hand is, well, dumb. That includes the guy who hires a
lowest-bidder crew to do it without making sure they have some Indian
backback sprayers ready to go. The fire regs are there for a good reason,
if a weed-whacker hadn't started this then any one of a dozen other things
could have, it was only a matter of time.

I watched one family on the news a couple of days ago lamenting about how
they know better, how they knew they should have done this, that and the
other thing--instead they did nothing and lost everything, escaped with the
clothes on their backs. Damn shame, but it's not like they moved into the
neighborhood a month ago, they'd seen previous fires come close, and still
they weren't ready....

Arrestor. That could have started the fire.

Arrestor. That could have started the fire.

Removing a spark arrestor is illegal in their state?! Some people
move there and never even have a spark arrestor.

Harassing a bear can be a federal offense. That charge can get you two
years in the pokey for a first offense. Stealing fish from a pond,
still gets a two year sentence.

Ah, yet another reason to live in western New York, rain and snow
capital of the east coast. When the west turns into one big parched
desert, we'll be complaining about the rain and the overcast skies.

Frost tonight but it might make it up to 60F tomorrow !!!

Fires in that area are "natural" and have been happening for centuries
before the land was developed. By preventing or putting out the fires
they are not being environmentally conscious IMO. Oh wait, rich green
Hollywood types live there, we'll have to make an exception.

My Sthil had one until I removed it because it would not rev high, I
think CA is stringent on that issue and for good reason.
