A year or so back, we had a thread on the best all around repair book
for homeowners, and it seemed at the time that one book in particular
was a clear favorite. Recollections?

Reader's Digest "New Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual'.
ISBN0-89577-378-3
Helps to prepare you for a Google search for more specific detail. I
have an early copy that still is a good overview if I get into some
unfamiliar repair territory (Hey! We can't know it all, right?). The
book is good enough that you can tell when the box store clerks are
BS'ing you. Or when a home inspector is blowing smoke. Or even if your
building inspector gets over the line on best practices.
Amazon has the 2005 edition for $22 +-. If that bends your budget,
there are used editions you could try first for say a buck or better.
Highly rated and recommended.

I had a Reader's Digest home repair book from ??? about 1970? I was
going to suggest it, as there is likely a more modern version, but
didn't want to embarass myself among experts. It had the basics for
almost everything, and helped me along with household mysteries, like
faucets.

You are absolutely right if the OP was concerned about repairing
homeowners. Do you think it appropriate start a new NG
alt.homeowner.repair? Might be a boon for the Super Duper safe wiener
saving table saw builders as seen on TOH. With posted graphics of
chain saw errors it could be quite popular.

Thanks for the responses ... FWIW, I actually found the text of the old
posting on my computer, finally (didn't note the article's author:)

++++++++++++++

"Do it yourself Home Improvement" with 3000 color photos and 400
projects.

Published by DK, authored by Julian Cassell, Peter Parha, Theresa
Coleman.

Available at Books a Million, Borders and other such chains. $35 and
worth it. I have Readers Digest too, and this is far better.

+++++++++++++++

So I perused both at the bookstore and ended up with this one. It's for
the g.f.'s birthday and reading it will give me a great reusable excuse
for procrastinating on the honey-dos. "Sorry, baby, I have to read the
book first ..."
