Too bad it's a Flash page. I wouldn't tell my worst enemy to install
flashplayer. You might as well just toss your hard drive off a
bridge, before some flash virus destroys it.

Never had an issue wtih Flashplayer. Speakeasy.net is a good
alternative.

That one has been around for a long time. Unfortunately it has no way to
tell you the actual speed if you are using Comcast (or others that use
"speedboost" or "powerboost") because the small temporary bursting you
get gives a large false reading.

YA, i found it interesting it showed me a 1.6 mb/s connection when i'm
on a 768k ISP.

This tells you how fast your internet connection is WHEN CONNECTED TO
THAT SITE. I'd much rather install a program like NetMeter
(http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/). This makes it possible to
see how fast your connection is in normal use (I transferred files
to/from my website's FTP).

Actually, speedtest.net gives you a choice of many servers to test
against. They highlight one they think will give you a reasonable test
result based on your IP. You can, however, pick any one you like.

Having many servers is a good idea, but that's still limited to
testing your connection's ability to do speed tests. If that the only
thing YOU do on the internet?

Interesting you mentioned that. Lots of people are into bragging rights.
The various upper tiers that ISPs have play right into that. I know some
people who obsess about "important" things like having the
biggest, fastest etc that will buy whatever the highest speed is
available and do endless speed tests just to verify what they have.

Why would you assume that because someone tested their connection
speed that is the only thing they do on the net? Kind of a big leap,
don't you think?

I have the basic Optimum Online cable - I didn't pay for anything
extra and I don't even know if that is offered to tell you the truth.
So I was curious to see what sort of speed I'm getting. For a local
server, the 'recommended' server from netspeed or whatever the OP
posted about is in NY, so it's local for me, and I got over 11 Mb/s
download and about a third of that upload. I next tried Chile and
Singapore to see what difference there'd be. Chile was around 6 Mb/s
down, and about a third of that up, Singapore was also around 6 down,
but only a tenth of that up.

Kind of interesting, but it really doesn't mean anything as I find the
individual sites I'm accessing are the bottleneck, and all computers
and connections wait at the same speed - slow.

The highest tier here (this is Suddenlink) seems to be for that
purpose. It is more expensive for what you get. I suppose a speed test
site is good for those people.

I spend relatively little time on speed tests.

I never claimed it is the only thing they do. But many dozens of emails
proclaiming the latest speed and the constant angst when the speedtest
shows they are seeing 2.1% less than someone else is a good indicator it
is the primary thing they do.

Notice that I didn't say that. I said that the (speed test site
results) show ONLY the speed while performing speed tests. That is,
the results are accurate IF that is all you do. Please read.
