Solar Pool Cover - ignore if you don't own a pool
Two years ago I bought a solar pool cover for my in-ground pool. 12 mil 5
year warranty. The one I bought was mfg by GLI Pool Products. First year was fine. At the end of the second year it started falling apart. There are little circles from the bubbles are all over the place and it tears real easy. So I got talked to the company that sold it to me (Warehouse Pool Supply, Austin Tx) and they told me to call GLI to find out about the warranty. I sent in the required info to GLI and they sent me back a letter. Telling me I was entitled to a new cover I'd just have to send them $125 for the freight. Funny thing is I can buy the same cover on the internet (free shipping) for about $80. http://www.pcpools.com/products/igso...u=NS400&id=117 I can't help but think this is a cynical joke. |

I have never got more than 2 or 3 years out of one. Be sure you put it out of the sun in the summer. Did you ever try to get them to honor the warranty? I do keep it out of the sun when it's on the reel. I had to replace the cheap white cover they gave me (with the solar cover) after one year. My yard is in the shade most of the time but it did wear out faster where it gets sun....but it is a "solar" cover. I'm not going to replace it until next year and I'm going to quit using it over the winter. I think that's the trick; only use it in those times of year when it's most effective. I was thinking of using it this winter and keeping the heater on but that's out now. olddog |

Is it sitting out in the sun uncovered? That'll do it. Bubba They provide a sheet of *white* trash bag material that "must be used" to cover the blanket when not in use. My *white* cover started falling apart after the first year. I requested a new one and Polyair sent two. Covering the blanket is an absolute must when not in use. When it's folded on it's reel the heating effect is magnified and the cover gets really hot on a sunny day. I put my reel on the side of my pool that has more shade and I always used the cover. I thought that they provide a cover that could only last for one year was strange. I think they know these things don't last that long so why bother with a decent cover. BTW: I got an email from GLI passing the buck to Polyair. I told GLI I'll make sure and post all this info on the internet. Polyair doesn't make Solar Pool Covers. They make packing material and insulation. Other companies claim Polyair makes Solar Blankets and back them up with phony warranties. http://www.glipoolproducts.com/ http://www.polyair.com/ olddog |

When you remove the solar cover from the pool so you can get in to swim, where does your solar cover go? Is it sitting out in the sun uncovered? That'll do it. Bubba To be honest I only use the solar cover for about a month in the spring and a few weeks in the fall... never use it in the summer once the pool get up to 80 degrees...in September when the pool temp drops below 80 then we pull it out again until we cklose the pool .. Neither my wife or I remove it from the pool when it is on the pool we just fold ot back on itself leaving half the pools area uncovered.... Too hard (or us being to lazy) to remove a 20x40 foot cover I guess Our cover is about 6 years old now and is still in ok shape... Bob G |

If I had to fold mine I'd probably do the same thing. With the new one I'm only going to use it sparingly. No more leaving it on all winter long. I was using it to help keep the pool clean and keep the chemicals from evaporating but if it's at the cost of the cover it's not worth it. olddog |

Some of my customers will even cut thier solar cover into a few
smaller pieces so it is easier to take on and off the pool. -Matt http://www.swimuniversity.com On Oct 1, 3:38*pm, "retired53" [email protected] wrote: "Bob G." rg327_remove_comcast.net wrote in message ... I guess that depends on the cost of the chemicals and your time. Do you spend more than the equivalent of $80 in materials and labor to clean and treat the pool? I know most will say "My time is free", but that's only true if you couldn't otherwise be engaged in a profitable activity while you were cleaning and treating your pool, or if you are not getting the full value of your pool because you can't use it until it's clean and treated. If you do determine that your time is truly "free" then there still the difference between the cost of the cover and the cost of the chemicals. i.e. the cover only "costs" $60 if you need to replace $20 worth of chemicals by not using it. You might just find that $80 once a year for a new cover is money well spent. It'll be different for everyone, so I'll let you do your own math. |

Over the winter there is not as much evaporation and the cover doesn't keep the pool any cleaner really. The leaves land on top and some fall into the pool over the side (because solar blankets lay on the water and don't overlap the edges). It's actually easier to keep clean w/o the cover. Unless chlorine goes WAY up the cost of chemicals is low. Right now I buy 40lb buckets of chlorine for around $80 (it was $60 two years ago) and it lasts over a year. Other chemicals don't add up to much. A little acid and a shock. Chlorine use drops as the temperature drops. There really isn't a very good reason to use the cover unless I am keeping the pool warm, and, if the winters keep getting milder I might consider it. It's something to think about. olddog |
