How block spam?

I used to access this NG from my email client where it was easy to
delete/filter spam, but TWC has discontined NGs.
Anybody know how to delete/filter spam on Google Groups? This NG seems
to get a lot of Asian, etc. spam.

TIA

Uh, don't use Google Groups. Use a news feed that filters (most of) it for
you. Giganews is one.

Of course if you switch ISPs from Comcast to Earthlink, you get Giganews
included. Cheaper, too.

Check out "aioe.org", it's a free
service that I use and I never see
a lot of Spam. The site has instructions
on how to setup various newsreaders.

Googlegroups also gets filtered out by a lot of wise people so the op's
posts do not get seen unless a less wise person responds to them.

I don't use Google Groups that much
because spammers can pick up your
E-mail address. The only time I use
GG is when I'm on a computer other
than my own and then usually just
to read posts.

I have Thunderbird set up to dump everything in the trash except
people on my contact list, people I send email to or messages that
have my name or nicknames in them.

Works pretty well for me.

I scan the spam and then empty the trash.

Oh yes. Spammers only get addresses from google groups. Never from Usenet.
Riiiight.

Yes, I looked into them briefly, but was discouraged by screwed-up
responses.
Maybe I will try again. I'd rather have a free service than pay for
NGs, as little
as I use them, but people do speak well of Giganews.

Of course if you switch ISPs from Comcast to Earthlink, you get Giganews

I'm not with Comcast, but with Time Warner (tfui!)

Thanks for the thought about Earthlink, but I would never use them
because their founder and some of the big shots are Scientologists,
and I wouldn't
want to put a penny into their coffers.

Thanks, Uncle. I had been to their Web site, but was baffled.
They say: "A set of visual configuration howtos
for the most common UNIX newsreaders are stored in this section."

The list does not include my newsreader/email client ???.

What do they mean by that? Is a newsreader the same as
one's email client? Mine is Forte Agent, which I have used for a long
time.

How can I configure Agent to read aioe.org?

I begin to fear this is beyond my tiny capabilities, if
I don't even understand the basic terms...g

Google Groups is an portal Usenet, silly.
If you look at my headers, you may notice
my E-mail addresses, try sending me an E-
mail. I haven't seen a way to protect my
E-mail address in GG without a lot of
contortions and inconvenience.

I'm using Thunderbird but if you look at
the setup for the listed newsreaders, it
may give you a hint. The news server is
"nntp.aioe.org" and there has to be a
place in your configuration to insert
that information. The help section or
online FAQ about your reader or client
may show you the way.

For news server, put in: news.aioe.org

For login method, choose, "no login required".

Very simple!

Do what I did, works like a charm.

Simply block all posts from Google Groups.

The founder was a scientologist. In 1996, the CEO was a Southern Baptist and
the CFO was a Roman Catholic.

Now that I know that in its early years Earthlink had a Papist on its staff,
I may have to reconsider its use.
