Default Bathroom fan

I recently hired a contractor to install a bathroom ceiling fan. He
hooked it up to vent out an existing vent stack. Is this OK to do?

Thanks,

If by existing vent stack you mean a vent stack for the sewer system,
the answer is NO. It's a code violation and for good reason. It
allows the possibility of sewer gas entering your home.
