Washing Machine Issue
 

Hi all,
The better half informed me this morning that the washing machine was
not draining completely after a load. It appears to be leaving about
2 inches of water in the bottom (obviously) of the tub. She is able
to re-start the washer at the end of a cycle to pump the rest of it
out. I checked at www.applianceaid.com but they didn't seem to have
any info on this particular problem. Any suggestions?

There are a number of reasons for poor draining. It is obviously
attempting to drain, or else there would be a full tub of water in
there. Here are some idea...

Check for a kinked drain hose in the rear.

Add more water, put machine into drain mode, lift up drain hose out of
drain pipe slightly to see stream of water. Is it forceful?

Is machine spinning? Machine might be draining but not spinning,
giving the appearance of not draining when the residual water in the
garments settles out of the fabric. If it isn't spinning, then you'll
need give the model number for some ideas on that.

Yes the machine is spinning. I saw that this morning while she was
draining the rest of the water. As for the stream of water I am not
sure. She just told me about it before work.... We drain directly
into a wash sink, so the pump is not pumping too high and no chance of
a kink.

Pump failure?? Are you sure its spinning out through all the cycles? Is
there too much water getting added during the wash cycle? Maybe the air
switch is bad.
I only ask because I just changed a direct-drive coupler in a Whirlpool
washer. No spin cycles left lots of water in tub.

check for sock partially blocking drain. its happened here

I drain directly into a sink next to the washer, and I'm almost
certain I had a kink.

My washer barely drained at all, but after I replaced the pump, I
couldn't find anything wrong with the old one, even when I broke it
open. The kink disappeared when I moved the washer away from the
wall, but I didn't try running the washer at that time. I wish I had.

The wsaher and its drain hose had been in almost the same location for
10 or 20 years (although I might have moved it a couple inches) and I
think the hose just got a little too much twist applied to it. When I
reassembled the whole thing, I had to move the hose to the far side of
the faucet

Is the wash sink draining correctly? The water could be siphoning
back into the washer after it is done draining, if the end of the
drain hose is under water level when the pumping stops.

Ok, had a chance to actually check things.
1. Sink is draining/pumping fine. (high stand pipe, sink drains to
transfer tank pumped to stand pipe)
2. Removed the drain hose from the tank to feel for a stuck sock,
nothing. (except water everywhere from the water in the tank)
3. Went to fill the drum to test, no cold water flow. I took a
toothbrush to the intake hose connection, water flowing again. I
wonder how long it was doing that....
4. I was not able to replicate the problem, filled the tank. Spin and
pump seems to be fine no water left standing. It took a little to get
the drum spinning after all of the water. (see number 2 above)
5. strong water flow from the hose and no kinks.
I guess I will have to keep an eye on it, see if it happens again. I
also, unrelated kinda, checked the empty pressure on my well tank,
looks good. Previous thread on that earlier. It is an Amana, model #
DLW330RAW, in case anyone was wondering.
