I'm remodeling my basement and putting in a gameroom. Have it all
framed in and the electrics run, but I was
thinking about broadband internet. I know this is kind off the repair
topic, but since I have everything open now
I was wondering if you guys thought dsl was easier than cable for
connection? I'd rather do this now before the
drywall goes up. One of my friends emailed me this link

DSL works off of a phone line and cable off of an RG-6 coax, so run one of
each to the locations that you may want to install your modem and router. If
you want to run Ethernet wiring to other pc locations, run CAT5 cable from
your router location to wherever you want a networked pc

I have DSL because the phone company had high speed before the local cable
company did. They both work well and cost is about the same. The phone
line is easily made into a DSL line and you probably want a phone in thee
anyway, so run the line. Since you may want to play some games or watch TV
when not using the Gameroom, go ahead and run the cable too It is a matter
of a splitter for the internet connection later.

What's that you say? Gameroom is two words?

One suggestion I saw on a television show was to run some conduit with
a pull string so you can pull whatever your heart desires at a later
date. And if you don't like that, pull it out and pull something new
in later.

It does not matter. You should not be running cableing to support your
DSL or cable Modem in the middle of your basement. The modem itself
should be off in the corner somewhere. Most likely put it right where the
phone and cable lines enter the house. From that point on you should be
running cat5 or cat6 cableing. So your basement should be wired with
cable for TV purposes, and cat5 for network purposes. But it makes no
sense to try to run wiring so you can put the cable modem in some random
location. Put it at the entry point. You dont need to see it for it to
do its job.

Run both wires. Wire is cheap. But get the proper wi CAT5 and RG8, I
believe.

There will come a day, next week, next year, when the service you chose
won't work for an extended period. This will inspire you, in turn, to sign
up for the alternate service.

Happened to us; our cable service was down for THREE WEEKS! After the first
week, we signed up for DSL. In a few days, we were back online - very much
slower, but online nevertheless.

I had to send an employee home twice a day to check our email. We couldn't
buy stamps (we use stamps.org), I didn't know the weather (that was fixed by
looking out the window), we couldn't process outgoing UPS parcels, our bank
balance remained a mystery, countless damsels who couldn't reach me via
eHarmony wept uncontrollably.

It's amazing how your entire life can get wrapped up in this internet
thingy!

Anyway, for $20/month we now have redundancy and I can sleep at night
(except for the aforementioned damsels).
