Door ideas
Hi,
Last year my parents removed their deck and had an extra room added to their house. They had exterior french doors going out to the deck and removed them and framed in the opening, leaving a finished opening 79" high by 69" wide. Well the openness has worn off and now they want to put some doors between the two rooms, preferably with glass. They say that finding doors to fit this opening is impossible. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks, Jeff |

Thanks, Jeff Been out of building supply for awhile, but doors werr obtainable 36"x 80". You trim to 34.5"x79". Two doors equal 69"X79" opening. problem solved. You have to have a carpenter that knows how to hang doors to install them. All Handyman's are not door hangers. Jack |

Stop in to any place that does custom millwork... they'd be more
helpful than you may think. Home Depot made me some 28" wide 6-panel doors for $50 a piece. For an opening like htat, you may want to consider double-swinging (or whatever the proper term is) hinges. Lee Valley has these. If it's a bedroom (why would you want glass then?) then normal $2 hinges out of the box on the shelf at home depot will do you. (don't buy the ones they have in the package on display...they cost more than twice as much than the basic stanley hinges which look exactly the same) |

When the doors were taken out it looks like the opening was merely finished
off with 1 x 4s or 1 x 6s and moldings. Just undo what was done by removing the molding and finished surface, then either install a standard double door (72 x 80) or add a stud wall and smaller standard-sized door (36 x 80).
