I have a heavy frost accumulation on the back wall of the freezer
compartment....in a refridgerator unit that's not very old....what's
causing that (the freezer isn't all that packed, and not opened
frequently)

You probably have a bad seal around the door which allows ambient moisture
to enter the compartment and freeze. Check to make sure the door(s) have a
complete seal around their perimeter.
