they do in the services field and hence cost at least 2x the
competition.

I had them out for grins to quote siding and windows and their quote
was over 3x the one I used. Very polished presentation and samples of
course, but so expensive you wonder how they stay in business.

That is a huge change for Sears. Back in the '90s, I bought a Weslo
treadmill from another store (Service Merchandise), but Sears offered
an extended warranty on the item. Because I was VERY dedicated to
using the treadmill every day, I literally destroyed it, repeatedly.
Sears techs came out to replace the motor, the belt, the platform, the
computer and almost every other part, repeatedly. My $75 extended
warranty cost Sears well over a thousand dollars, all told.

They also used to be very good with riding mower servicing, and just
about everything else. I also wondered how they stayed in business,
but for a different reason than you did. With all of the business
changes that occurred since they dropped their big catalog operation,
they are a very different company. I expect that is even more true
since KMart gobbled them up.

So, they appear to have over-corrected from being too generous to
being too stingy.

Yes, they told me I needed a new furnace and the one I have won't make
it through the winter. This was 8 years ago and the furnace is still
going strong.

A couple of days after that inspection I had the local Lennox dealer
look at the furnace and was told the furnace I have (Lennox) is a very
reliable furnace and it was in good condition, but wasted a lot of heat
and recommended a better furnace.

Needless to say I won't be calling Sears anymore.

A local service company?? Who do you think is sent when you call
Sears? They don't have a staff of HAVC specialists sitting around on
payroll. There are lots of incompetent people in the trade and you
better have a referral if you want a good one.

Oh, they send a local company that will work for cheap and let Sears make a
lot of money. They may or may not be competent, but they are certainly high
priced.

I don't have much confidence in Sears anything at all. Definitely not
a heater inspection.
