INGLIS WASHER WIZ WANTED: MOTOR TESTING ISSUE

I am looking for help on troubleshooting this Inglis direct drive2
speed washer.
The red wire is line, yellow is neutral. I bought a new motor (used),
my washer spins but no agitation. After testing the red wire what would
be the other line wire to test for the opposite direction. Are these
Inglis motors ever defective and work in one direction only? Am I
correct that the wash and spin cycles are effected with a change of
direction of the motor? Any help would be much appreciated, Richard

Generalizing:
If there are only 2 wires and the supply is AC voltage. It is a one way
motor.

If the motor is DC, there must be a controller to switch the polarity of the
motor.

IF AC and you insist it is 2 way, there must be 3 or more wires.

Lets try again, how about:
http://h1.ripway.com/uomobijou/inglis_mtr_dia.jpg
I think this is a 2 way as there are I think 5 wires going to it
and my other washers used to be 2 way.
There is attached to the exterior of the mtr a 2" black round
thing with two wires going to it, would this be what is called a
controller?
What I was also hoping to find out what is the commonest problem
encountered with these driect drive motors.

.................looking forward....Rick
