How to build a snowman.

We are trying to build a snowman on our day trip to the mountains for the
weekend. The last time we tried to build a snowman our hands froze and
nearly got frostbite as we soon realized that the snow were as hard and
heavy to pickup as sand. We are not familiar with snow and we are
dumbfound as to how to build a snowman. We will bring a shovel, a
carrot, a large hat, a scarf and a camera. What is a practical way to
build a snowman body form in half a day?

Thanks.

#1 wear warm gloves - preferably with a waterproof layer, not the cloth
gloves as they will be soaked and cold within minutes.
#2 Building a snowman only works with reasonably wet snow (if you can
make a snowball by packing snow in your hands without having to squeeze
really hard, then it should be ok) - if the snow is cold and dry and
doesn't stick to itself very well then you're out of luck I'm afraid.
#3 Start with a large snowball, roll it along the ground and let it
pick up snow as it rolls, it's own weight will pack the snow into
itself and it will become larger as you roll it. Roll it as large as
you like for the bottom section. The middle section should be slightly
smaller (snow is heavy, so make sure you can lift it), The head should
be smaller still.
#4 as you stack the sections, you may need to pick up handfulls of snow
and pack them into the spaces between the larger body sections to
stabilize them
#5 apply hat, scarf, and carrot (no, not THERE! the NOSE!)
#6 take picture

Now, there are some substeps in there that are important if you're
doing this as a family. Frequent breaks need to be taken to throw
snowballs at each other. Some screeching and laughing is normal.
Enjoy.

you make a snowball and start rolling it
the wetter and fluffier the snow the quicker the ball will form
make the bottom about 4' big a round

for real...you don't need a shovel..(but you can use it in the end to
sculpt)

i built a snowman and woman and two children...

but i'll tell you this free of charge
if you are planning a snowman
this is not something you plan
this is something you do spontaneous

don't make no more plans for nothing, just go and have fun

turn the dang internet off!

Ya put your biggest ball on the bottom and your smallest ball on top.
Then you find a friend with medium sized balls and stick one of them
in the middle. Carrots and buttons are optional.

There are days when the snow it just too dry and no one could make a snow
man unless they had access to a hose hooked up to water I suppose. That's
part of the magic of snowman making. There are times when it just the right
wetness and you just start rolling. Snow Angels are great in dry snow.
Just lay down and wave your arms and legs back and forth then get up
carefully and enjoy your art.

My wife, Sandy, is kind of funny about putting cleavage on the
snow-women. She's so cool.

Tom in KY, we usually only get one good snowman or snow-woman per year.
Blame global warming?

Slim chances on that one in real life or the snow. She's cool but,
well, maybe not THAT cool out in the yard.

Tom in KY, keeping it real man,,,
