Assuming that both pieces can take the heat, can something brass be
welded to steel ?? Thank you.

Brass and steel cannot be welded togther. However, they can be brazed, silvered
soldered, or plain (lead) soldered. Brazing is a very strong joint, nearly the
equal of welding in some cases. Silver solder can be nearly as strong, and
usually produces a much neater joint than brazing due to the wicking action of
the silver solder. It is also a lower temperature process than brazing.

Silver Soldering IS brazing. Unless you are talking about a low
temperature silver bearing solder like Stay-Brite #8, which is just
soldering. Different brazing allows melt at different temperatures,
from about 1200 degrees to about 1700 degrees F.

NOTE: Do NOT use the stick silver bearing brazing rods that contain
phosphorous (like 6% or 15%) when brazing anything to STEEL.. It will
form a brittle joint that will eventually break under stress. Use 35%
to 50% silver bearing brazing allows that have no phosphorous instead.
