soundproofing/fireproofing flat conversion period building
 

Hi there,

I'm looking to soundproof a flatconversion and am interested if there any products that do both. I would also like to know if anybody has experience putting wooden floors on top of these systems, R-10?
do they work and comply with doc E?
Is acces to the ceiling below indispensible?
any thought welcome!!!

Most anything you do to add proper fireproofing will also reduce sound
transmission.

The problem is they are not the same and neither is all that simple.
You will need to check your local regulations for what is needed in
fireproofing and they may have soundproofing requirements as well.

I suggest http://www.soundproofing.org/ as one source of soundproofing
supplies and information.

In general you want to block air exchange. Air caries sound very well.
(Try opening your car's window as a train is going by.)

Next you want weight. Heavy things (drywall lead sheets etc.) block
sound well.

You also want to prevent any direct solid connections. Stagger wall
studs or use special isolation devices to keep the sound from traveling
through the wall (remember the two cans on a string (well wire actuarially
worked) you want to break the wire).

Filling in wall cavities with sound absorbing materials (accustical
fiberglass bats) will do a little.

Point source control (special absorption material) at the source of the
sound will also help.
