Attic Split System Air Conditioner Question: Outside Air From ?
 

Hello:

Moved into a house that has an attic locatedsplit type of air conditioner to
feed the upper level.

Attic is really low, so it's very hard to see, or crawl around in there, to
investigate.

This is a typical tri-level (split) in New England (30 yrs old).

For these attic mounted evaporator sections, that apparently have a blower
as part of
the system, does the blower "typically" use attic air, or do they
"typically" have
a duct, somewhere, leading to the outside for air intake ?

If it is a standard installation neither. Using attic air for the supply
would certainly cause problems. Out side air, is usually a high end option
and would require some controls to make it work correctly. You would be able
to see a grill outside of the house that would different.
Typically the air is drawn in from the house through a filter/return and
then through the airhandler, then back into the living space out the
registers. These units work just like every other a/c except the
condenser/compressor is remote to the inside coil.

They just recirculate room air, so there is a 'return' or duct
somewhere that is bringing in the room air to condition it and send it
back out again after its trip thru the evaporator.

I've never heard of one using attic air.
