Tub faucet - what keeps the escutcheon attached to the wall?
 

Am replacing a washer in a leaky bathtub faucet, and in getting in
there, the escutcheon is no longer tight to the wall. How was it held
on there to begin with? It has no screws, it was just snug to the wall.
Is there glue or something? Or did I not put things back properly if
it's not being held to the wall?

I took it apart again today. There was a plastic ring that goes around
the overall faucet structure - the escutcheon is a friction fit to it.
But this ring is old, broken, and covered in deposit, so things didn't
naturally go together - but now that I am looking for it, I could snick
them together with a big of wriggling and get it all back snug to the
wall. Thanks!!
