Garage Door Opener Problem
 

Wondering if anyone's seen this problem. My garage door opener acts as
though it has an electrical short somewhere. Sometimes when I press
either the wall switch or one of the remotes, the door will not
immediately open (or close), or it will open partially. When it
doesn't open, the light doesn't come on either, but it may come on by
itself 10 seconds later. The door frequently stops at some point
whether going up or down, and not always at the same place. Any ideas?

Shorts are normally easy to find, just look for the source of
the smoke and flames. If you don't have a fire, then you more
likely have an open circuit. You can go and tighten all the
electrical connections to solve most opens. In this case,
however, I think you have other problems. If you are lucky,
the force adjustment needs to be tweaked. Get out your manual,
and look for the adjustment controls on the motor unit. There
may be between 1 and 4 adjustments, and they are most often
behind little holes in the side or bottom of the case. A
quarter turn will usually fix the problem. This goes double
if the problem is normally worse in the winter.

Beyond that, you don't seem to be getting enough force to
open the door. If the adjustments don't work, you may need
to adjust the springs, use a better lubricant, tighten the
belts, or fix bad brushes in the motor.
