Garage Door Open Problem
 

I installed a Sears screwdrive garage door opener about 18 months ago and
it's worked great up until last week. Symptons were that the screw drive
made a lot of noise and failed to pull the door up. I could push the
'connector car' up and down the track so assumed the internal mechanism that
ride on the screw threads was shot.

I order a replacement and I installed it tonight (the old one was obviously
stripped) however the opener has developed or also had a different problem.
When on and disengaged from the door the screw itself is making a heck of a
noise - it is almost like it is lose in it's tunnel and is 'thrashing
around'. I disassembled the support beam (it is made up of 3 pieces) and
looked at the screw - which seems fine. It runs inside a plastic tunnel -
which also looks fine. I've checked the beam and it seem straight and true.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

I assume that the new screw came with a tube of grease, and that you
used the whole thing? My Sears screwdrive garage door opener gets
cranky every winter, but the grease seems to help.

I use a synthetic bicycle grease - it is easy to find at any bike shop
and it works fine.

Thanks for the suggestion - I've greased it well. I don't think that is the
issue.

first check and see if the section nearest the opener is turning
normally -the opener has double female interconnect between the male
hex drive on 1st screw section and motor drive- if undamaged then
problem is likely screw section binding clips. inspect the junction
points where the screw sections combine. there should be a barrel that
slides up from the long throated side to marry the 2 pieces and a half
barrel that then snaps under it so it can not slip down.if you lost a
clip and the barrel is free to travel the noise will be generated by
slop and only thing holding screw pcs together is the confines of the
housing.
