Moving Costs.

Ok, Im a frugal, live like a monk type of person.

Still have a 25 inch tv as my main tv, its about 16 years old, its the
old school with wood around the edges. But it still works fine.
Furniture is maybe 10 years old, the cloth is a bit worn, but its
still good.

Anyway, I live in NY.
My sister and her husband live in California.

They are planning on moving overseas for work.
They do not want to ship all their stuff over, so they want to give me
a bunch of their stuff. Couches, tv (widescreen-cool), etc...

Now is it even worth it?

We will probably have to hire a moving company...but the cost of
moving something from Cali to NY is probably very expensive.

Plus they (actually my sister, my bro-in law is overseas already) have
a lease with 2 years left, so they are thinking about transfering it
to me.
But that will have to be moved also...

Would it be cheaper in the long run for them to sell it cheaply in
Cali?

Cheaper for who?

Who was going to pay the moving cost? They want the stuff back later
or giving it to you permanently? If they don't want the stuff back
later, undoubtedly it is cheaper for them to sell what they can & junk
the rest, than to pay to ship it somewhere, or even give it all to
someone (because then they don't get the money for what could be
sold).

It's not any cheaper for you unless you assume as your base line that
you were going to buy all that stuff anyway (which it doesn't sound
like you were). When you ask "cheaper" you need to state what it is
you are comparing to, "cheaper" is a comparative term.

To rent the smallest truck from Uhaul to go from CA to NY is about $2K. This
excludes cost to get down there, lodging, food, gas. Moving company is
probably at least that much.

As another poster said, would you buy this stuff anyways sometime soon? If
not than I don't know if you'd gain anything.

And get a new job, and a bunch of other headaches.

Better for them to sell it for as much as the market will bear.
