range hood exhaust to outsidee

In the house we are building, they are putting in standard 30"
cabinets with a foot above them open (8' main floor). We are putting
in a range hood in place of the standard microwave-hood combo. This
will be ducted to the ceiling and the duct will follow joists
gap(parallel to counterspace) to the outside. How does one usually
cover the area ABOVE the cabinet where the duct tube has to go
through? It is too much to ask the builder to sheetrock the entire 1
foot clearance above cabinets.

Also any cost effective suggestions for a range hood. I have the
frigidaire 30" stainless steel model in mind (~$300).

thanks

We have a similar setup, though we have a microwave/convection oven/fan
built into the range hood. The area above the island/range hood has a
soffit just like the areas above the cabinets. A cabinet is mounted to
the underside of this with a chase up the inside for the wiring and
exhaust ductwork. The duct goes up into the ceiling and out between
the joists. The downside is that the fan doesn't draw very well
because of the distance (3' vertical, 8' horizontal) to the outside.
It could be that the microwaves' fans have been wimpy.

Mine is a custom copper thing that covers the entire island. The
previous owners shelled out the beans for it! ;-)
