Pulsating water from faucets

Jim,
I'm not certain about _all_ faucets, but definitely at least a few different ones. I think it's happening with both hot and cold but I'll be sure to pay more attention the next time it does it to make sure. Thanks, Jim. Where would I find it (the pressure reducing value)? Would it
be outside somewhere near the shutoff valve? Incidentally, I did pay more attention the last time, and it's definitely only the _cold_ water that pulsates. P.S. Happy Thanksgiving! If it were related to the PRV, I would expect both Hot and Cold to be affected. The PRV would normally be near where the service comes in to the house, or by the meter. If the faucet mainly affected is a kitchen one which has a spray wand, then the "diverter" valve (part of the faucet) is a candidate. If *all* faucets are affected, possible it is pressure buildup in the water heater from expansion during heating. The pressure will bleed off the first time water is used after a heating cycle. An instance of pulsating water that I had experienced once was due to a washer coming loose inside a faucet. When the faucet was turned on, the washer bounced up and down on the shaft of the loose washer screw. Since you say it involves all of the faucets, you might look at your main or branch shut-off valves. See if operating the valves makes a difference. However, the problem could still be in just one faucet. If the culprit is on and pulsating, then the flow from other faucets that are on the same system and on at the same time could be affected. A fix is simple. Take the faucet or valve apart and tighten the washer screw -- might as well install a new washer while you're at it. TKM |

How long does the pulsation last? Jim Jim, Thanks again for the information. I just wanted to follow up and mention what the problem turned out to be in the hope that this information may be useful to someone else in the future. I may not get the terminology correct, but basically here's what happened: my wife called a local plumber who told her that it was normally due to one of the water lines running more or less continuously which could cause some type of build-up (pressure or air?) in the entire system that would bleed off when the cold water is turned on. Sure enough, we had a toilet with a refill valve that never shut off completely and when I replaced the float in that tank the problem went away. Needless to say, I'm very grateful to the plumber who was willing to diagnose the problem over the phone, allowing me to fix it for a mere $5 and a trip to Home Depot. |

May I suggest that if you haven't already done so, call the plumber back and thank him. -- Rich Greenberg Marietta, GA, USA richgr atsign panix.com + 1 770 321 6507 Eastern time.
