cedar siding splitting

Having problems with my bevel cedar siding splitting. I live in
Wisconsin. The house is sixteen years old.

Had the house three years when I noticed that we had quite a few splits
at the ends -- where the siding met a window or trim -- and to a lesser
extent running down the center in the middle of the siding. Spent
about three weekends going around the house, caulking the splits.

Thought this would hold me for a while, but I found more splits this
Spring. Filled them in, thinking that these were caused by the cedar
shrinking in the Winter. But now, just a month later, I found quite a
few more splits, and some big ones at that.

Is this normal for a sixteen year old house to be splitting like this?
Doesn't seem right to me.

Is it normal to be chasing cracks around your house with the caulk gun?

I'm sure it will eventually reach a point where we will have to replace
the cedar with Hardiplank or vinyl, but I'm hoping to forstall it for
as long as possible.

How much maintenance have you done in sixteen years? Cedar will dry out and
crack/split without proper maintenance. Visit here for starters.
