Default Transistor question

I'm trying to teach myself electronics, and it's like hacking my way through
a jungle. Anyhow, what is the difference between a PNP and an NPN transistor
besides the compound configuration?

That is a very nice book to understand. I guess what I should have asked is
on what application would you use a PNP and when would you use an NPN? I
understand how they work. I just don't understand how you know which one to
use.

Thanks

They are bias differently..
The one you use depends on what power supplies you have available.
There are also many tricks connecting PNP and NPN together to accomplish
circuitry not possible with vacuum tubes.
