Problems with Hitachi H2570 LCD module

I have some problems with a newer version of the H2570 display. The old
one was defective, but when I tried an identical LCD in known good
order, the display is OK, so rest of the system seems to be working.
The boards are different, the old one has one OKI M5259 IC, the new one
has one Hitachi HD44100H. The other IC is HD44780A00 on both modules.
The boards also have different layouts, but has identical bus connector
and are supposed to be compatible.
The original board is marked 97-44145-9, the newer is marked 44027-9.
Has anyone good advice on how to make this newer board function?

The supply pins (+5V and ground) are sometimes reversed on these
"compatible" modules. Also, the contrast adjustment schemes vary. The
interface timing may also be different.
