Sylvania 9" AC-DC TV/DVD Combo

I am wondering is anyone has any experience with these units? The
model number is SSC509D it is just out of warranty and the DVD started
having trouble reading a disk, now it won't read one at all. It will
still play an audio CD.

Does any one know if parts are available or any ideas on what I could
try? I do not have a schematic for the unit but do understand
electronics.

Thanks for any help and ideas.

Greetings..

First and foremost, where is the reference contact information in the
owner's manual? IF the owner's manual isn't available - why not? The one
thing to keep for ANY electronics (especially programmable) appliances
is the owner's manual! Ordinarily, if this isn't available (lost or
worse, thrown out), most folks will simply advise to discard the
appliance and start over, IF it becomes defective.

Unfortunately, like nearly everything else, Sylvania is NOT a U.S. based
company any more. Indeed, like nearly everything else these days, it's
now owned by the Japanese and/or Chinese. As such, unfortunately, they
would rather you just buy another one than put the time, effort and
expense into fixing what you've got. Likewise, it seems to be the
general consensus of those that *used* to service such electronics.
While a 'convenient' alternative, it sure doesn't do our land fills any
good...

That being said, the first thing I would do is to call the customer
support line and explain that it's failed JUST out of warranty. Perhaps
a PR attitude of you're willing to work with them IF they're willing to
take it easy on the consumer in this case might go a long way. A bit of
on line searching finds that "Funai Corporation" now owns Sylvania.
Interestingly enough, although on their corporate link, the Sylvania
link is dead, their corporate headquarters and customer support
telephone line is available.

Good luck..

If it isn't a lens-cleaning issue, the DVD assembly will need to be replaced
complete. Welcome to the world of disposable Chinese junk. We wanted those
low Walmart prices, and we got them. This is the result.

Funai is probably the producer of that product. They maks a lot of the
Syavania tagged devices now.
