Motherboard caps
 

I have a VIA motherboard with some bulged caps, rating 2700
microferrad, 6.3 volts. can I replace these with 3300 micr,16 volt
caps?

You'd probably be better off getting a new motherboard.

Provided they are low enough ESR and they are physically similar sized there
shouldn't be any problem - assuming the voltage regulators haven't already
been overstressed by the capacitors failing that is.

Yes, if they'll physically fit, usually there's not much extra space though,
it's common for the originals to be physically touching each other.

No need to trash the motherboard.

Replace the caps and return it to service.

Make sure you get low ESR caps, DigiKey is a source.

Use a big soldering iron with a wide tip to touch both leads at the same
time for quick heatup and removal. One leg of these caps is usuall connecter
to the motherboard and desoldering it requires heat and thermal mass to get
the job done quickly without damage.

I use a 100 watt with a half inch wide heavy copper tip. After the cap is
out open up the holes with more heat and a stainless dental pick. Install
new cap and resolder.

Have been doing one or more a week for the last two years thanks to SOYO
using cheap caps. Never lost a board yet. Powersupplies are morelikely to
have heat damage and price wise they are not worth the risk from the HV.

I did, and computer has worked fine for about a year now. (got it free
because it didn't work)
