washing machine motor

the washer stopped spinning so i removed the belt and tried it again and motor would not spin so i helped it along by turning the pully and it ran so i figured it was the capacitor bought a new one that had a different mfd reading.the original was 233-280 mfd 110vac and the new one is 233-292mfd 110/125 they told me it would work it did the same as the other motor still would not spin.so i ordered another one that took a week to get, this is a 3 year old machine.put new motor in without belt and still would not spin without help?could it just be another bad capacitor?there is 110 volts going to the capacitor.is there an easy way to check capacitor?and what is the MFD readings stand for? thanks mike

The capacitor value is not critical, your new one is perfectly acceptable.
The microfarad rating is the capacitance, though motor start caps are by no
means precision devices. Obviously the capacitor isn't the problem here,
it's probably the starting switch or some wiring to or around the motor. You
may be best off having an appliance tech look at it, you've already thrown
away money replacing two perfectly good capacitors, there's no sense in
continuing to throw money at it unless you do some troubleshooting and are
able to determine the problem.

Did you replace the capacitor or the motor?

Get a book from the library on major appliance repair. Also, have someone
standing by who knows first aid.

i replaced both the motor and capacitor. also noticed one of the belt pully's hard to turn so tried second motor without belt only after trying it with belt first and it hummed for a little while maybe 5 seconds.would this burn out the starter winding in new motor that fast? thanks mike

Then it's something else. You really need skills at this point.

Something doesn't make sense. How many wires go to the motor?

A diagram would be nice.

I wonder if it's a cap run motor (PSC) that reverses?

There's only 2 or 3 common designs of conventional top-loading washing
machines, most even have a schematic inside. When I got mine the timer had
some burned contacts that was causing the motor to not start.

it has a capacitor start and a high and low speed,it seems to not have that extra boost on start up.i am trying to get my scanner going to post the diagram.what should the output reading be from the capacitor to motor because i am getting just 120volt should it be more? thanks mike

You can't imply much from the voltage readings. The problem is you don't
know what the phase angles are. I'd measure the currents going to the motor
and through the capacitor.

That won't tell you anything, you need a different phase to the starting
winding to get the motor going and you can't measure phase difference with a
multimeter. Check the timer mechanism for burned contacts, and check the
starting switch on the motor, messing with the capacitor you're just wasting
your time.

A diamond nail file from the dollar store works well. Don't use emery.
